For K.I.C.K.S.
The program named "Kids Involving Cops for Knowledge and Sport" or "For K.I.C.K.S.", was initiated by Sergeants Steve Hicks and Peter Duncan in 2002 to serve the 31 division of the Toronto Police Services. The program engages at-risk youth in a variety of sports activities as a strategy for undermining gang-related activity and equipping youth to succeed in sports, school and life.
For K.I.C.K.S. was designed to assist at-risk youth overcome systemic barriers that prevent them from experiencing the enjoyment of sport. As an integral component of this branch, sport, specifically soccer, serves as the vehicle to teach youth important life skills through mentoring sessions.
The program provides soccer skills and life skills training with a view to enhancing self confidence and team building skills and challenging energies into meaningful activities.
Youth mentoring with officers through soccer is a great environment for breaking down barriers between police and youth and providing good adult role models that may otherwise not be there.
